By definition people that expose themselves to death for no reason are crazy lunatics. This includes anyone doing home invasions.

So you already know there is a crazy violent (breaking in) lunatic threatening you and your family. That's bare minimum. Why would you hold back? Objectively they have already valued their own lives at zero, the debate about their value as a person is over.
