I knew a few people, who had to hold off college, even for many years, because of WW2. Many of them finished college later and were very successful, as scientists, doctors, chemists.

As people here advised, I would throw in these arguments.

And raise the question, if your college will writtenly consent, to take all liability. They won't, because it could be their financial abyss.
