I remember him being Usama early after 9/11, I remember hearing UBL for short. But then everyone just settled on Osama after a little bit. All of new foreign names in the news go through a “we’re not sure of the proper pronunciation or spelling because it’s not an English word” phase. But this is totally to make it not look like Obama.
