Friendly PSA that Lyme bacteria is literally everywhere now, wherever there are migrating birds there is Lyme — don’t let any doctor tell you otherwise. Also, doctors are ignorant about Bartonella, Babesia, and the dozens of other co-infections (viruses, bacteria, and parasites) that ticks carry.
The standard ELISA test for Lyme is inaccurate 50% of the time. Even if you test negative you can still have Lyme. Lyme is also sexually transmitted and transmitted from mother to child en utero.
The most common misdiagnosis for Lyme and co-infections is “Chronic Fatigue Syndrome,” followed by “Multiple Sclerosis.”
Bartonella can also look just like Bipolar Disorder. 50% of the cats in the US are infected with Bartonella — it’s the number one cause of disability in veterinarians.
As a junior doc this was interesting, and I agree that Lyme is way more widespread than is routinely taught, however I am confused as to how Lyme gets misdiagnosed as Multiple Sclerosis when to diagnose MS, you need an MRI showing demyelinating plaques separated by space and time.
I was misdiagnosed with MS and I have neurological Lyme and Bartonella. I have brain lesions, Lyme causes them. There are many, many cases of people with Lyme being misdiagnosed with MS, there’s a surfer who has a Ted Talk about his misdiagnosis. There have been studies done where Lyme bacteria was found in the brains of MS patients at autopsy.

Very interesting, thanks!
