If you reduce the mosquito populations hugely, this affects many other species that eat mosquitoes by the thousands, like bats, birds, reptiles, fish and other insects. I am happy to have diseases mosquitoes bring, be reduced. But you can't have both...a healthy ecosystem and 25% of the former mosquito population. Not forever. The ramifications may not be felt for a long time. So most people say "not my problem". Also, this project is considerably better than blanket pesticide spraying, which is just a horror!
