AFAIK, in the UK they refer to people from South Asia (Indians, Pakis, and Bengalis, etc) as Asians, whereas in the U.S. when we reference Asians we’re generally thinking/talking about East Asia or SE Asia (Japan, Korea, China & Vietnam, etc). Something about how historically the British have more experience with the Indian subcontinent, while Americans have more experience in East/SE Asia
At least that’s how an anon explained it to me on 4chon back in the mid-2000’s. I think British media referring to Muslim pedos as Asians is generally understood by the British public that they’re from South Asia, unless someone actually from the UK would care to correct me.
However, when American media refers to them as Asians, they’re either doing it on purpose or incredibly lazy. My bet is on the former

Yeah, I think the Brits used to refer to East Asians as Orientals - and just East Asians, nowadays. Plain 'Asian' is reserved for South Asians.
