I understand both sides and feel like I could argue both sides. If we say the existence of a heartbeat is what determines a life, then at what point does the heart start beating? It's always beating, the beat is just too minor for machines to detect it. Almost right at conceptions there is a vibration in the cells that will later turn into a heart. With that said though, I have a rather unpopular opinion for this board. I just don't view an embryo to be the equivalent of a human. It has a lot of potential, but we know that miscarriages happen weeks after conception because the body has decided that the embryo is not capable of life (chromosomes, etc.)
Pregnancy is extremely difficult on the womans body and I believe a woman should be given a window of time to rectify an undesirable situation. We know from countries, like Georgia, where abortion was made illegal and it resulted in many children ending up in children's homes or growing up with mother's who don't want them. This led to crime rates skyrocketing two decades later. Sure, in a perfect world, anyone who does not wish to have a child can give the child to someone who does, but what happens when there are more children than families who want them?
I understand very much that this is an unpopular opinion and I'm not looking for any nasty debate, but you seemed genuinely curious for others opinions. To me, a child being born to a mother who does not want it is much more heartbreaking (for the mother and child) than abortion in the very beginning of pregnancy because I view it as only cells with potential for life, much like sperm and eggs are cells with potential for life.
I'm certainly not saying that abortion should be used as a form of birth control, absolutely not. But I think that it's better for everyone if a woman has an out early on. Give her the ultrasound and chastise her for not being more careful, but give her an out.
I come to this point of view based on the following scenario. Imagine a husband and wife where the husband purposely keeps getting the wife pregnant because he wants to have as many babies as possible. Obviously this is an abusive relationship all around with many control issues. Yes, ideally the woman should leave him, but she is just too afraid or can't for many reasons. If she was strong enough to leave, she wouldn't have gotten herself into this mess. She knows that having any more children will throw them into poverty. Her way of dealing with the situation is to have early term abortions. Is it ideal? Absolutely not. The wife is certainly not happy about this solution but at least she has an out and she won't be subjecting her family to poverty, she won't be subjecting any additional children to growing up with this man as a father, who will in turn carry on in the same way in society. At least she can focus on her two children and do the best that she can with them. As crazy as this sounds, this is an actual true situation and I'm very greatful this woman had an out.
I absolutely understand your view as well. Do you believe a body can have two souls? That particular aspect to me can be confusing because I would say it can't and that a soul maybe planned to join a body from birth, I don't believe it can until the baby is actually born because then there will be two souls inside the mother's body. What is your take on this?
That is a very good point. I wasn't brought up with the bible, so I apologize if I don't get the reference correctly, but I would argue that the soul exists before conception, conception doesn't create a new soul. Therefore, David encountering his baby's soul in heaven would make sense even if the baby was to die before birth without it necessarily meaning that the soul had joined the baby's body.
This discussion has made me think that if we lived as a society in a better way (for example if premarital sex was highly discouraged) then our need for things like abortions would no longer exist. I think making abortion illegal would cause a lot of problems for our society given it's current state (as in the Georgia example), but if we changed our society at the core to really influence more traditional values, then I think the need for abortions would be greatly minimized.
