Back around the turn of the century unions filled a need. Most of the factories, mills, mines of the industrial revolution were populated with people from all parts of the world. Since most were dirt poor, didn't know the language they were often cheated, abused by being make to work very long hours in unsafe, unhealthy environments for little money just to try and survive. Unions were needed to protect the vulnerable from the richest of the rich,
Now, workers in the United States have a much different situation. There is a whole body of law built around them being treated fairly, in safe environments, etc. Rather than being at the mercy of employers, workers can search for better jobs, get training to do better paying jobs, choose an area they feel is a good fit for them, not jammed in front of a scorching blast furnace 12 hours a day, 6 days a week with little training for pennies an hour.
But interestingly there are many places on earth where labor is treated like slaves. Places where they work long hours in cramped sweat shop environments for low wages. Southeast Asia, Africa, Indo China, Central America should be where the unions should go. Let them go to China and demand better pay for garment workers, not here in America.
