Happens all the time. During the equinox (in the fall and the spring), the earth's magnetic field is shifting, which opens cracks in the field, allowing charged particles to stream in towards the planet. i.e. more auroras at the poles.
The biggest events can be visible down to the equator. That would cause problems.
Anyway, here is a good site to learn a bit more about what is currently going on in space.
