Smiling in public

Today I went grocery shopping. More than half the people were not wearing masks. Of all the people I passed only 2 made direct eye contact with me at two separate times. I smiled at both of them. No smile back. The first person I just felt awkward because there was no reciprocated smile. The second person looked mad I smiled at them. Anyone else notice this or am I going with the I'm just crazy escuse?

I was mask less from the start. Way back months ago I noticed the maskers did not acknowledge each other at all.
