I just found this; it looks to be a very well-researched article, and this seems to be only part one of the story.

Wasn't this the same AZT bullshit that was shown in that movie Dallas Buyers Club ? Docs were letting people die in horrible pain while giving them only the AZT (a medication with severe side effects) and placebos, so people went to Thailand, Canada, Europe and Mexico to try alternate therapies and medications, many only saved themselves because of that.

So it was the gremlin calling the shots back then ?
