I'll tell the story; when I went into engineering (10 yr hiatus from HS) first test was boolean logic (true or false logic) and no calculators because "if you use a calculator everyone gets 100% and it is not a test." So, on the way to the test a guy asks me for some help because he can't multiply decimal numbers. I show the process quickly but in my head I can't escape the "ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!! YOU ARE GOING TO BE AN ENGINEER AND YOU CAN'T DO MATH?!?!?"
i'm a carpenter and have people at work who cant do simple math as well or even read a ruler correctly.. when superiors discovered we were getting paid same rate
i got a raise and dum dums got left behind.

Not being able to read a tape is tough too, but most should be able to pick it up.
Also, it turns out that while math is important, the majority of math used is pre-calculated into filled tables.
That guy took a extra year, and thanks to nepotism is now practicing.
