You are not wrong as far as US Flag Code is considered. US flag code states:
(b) The flag should never touch anything beneath it, such as the ground, the floor, water, or merchandise.
(e) The flag should never be fastened, displayed, used, or stored in such a manner as to permit it to be easily torn, soiled, or damaged in any way.
(k) The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.
You can interpret these laws as meaning that the flag should not touch the ground, ONLY to prevent it from being soiled. In otherwords, if the floor is clean clean enough, then it is acceptable? I do not personally udnerstand the nuances of Flag Code.
