That wouldn't really explain their immediate reactions. I'm leaning towards it being a symbol or a picture, something they could parse instantly.

Perhaps it was the pyramid with the all seeing eye with a big red circle and a slash through it. In other words, the system is no more. You know, like the one on the dollar bill.
