I believe that what is specifically being patented here is some drug (antagonist) which blocks the interaction of the GP120 spike from binding onto the integrin receptor α4β7.

I don't know, but the archived page I linked said that the HIV spike GP120 was patented by Harvard who gave exclusive rights to Cambridge Bioscience.
I wonder if Epstein funding was used
I wouldn't be surprised. He may have funded some genetic research, though his contributions were generally made anonymously to keep his name and reputation from being associated with the research he was funding.
