Mnuchin has been an Executive PRODUCER on many movies, which has zippo to do with "directing." I would know b/c I used to be an Associate Producer and worked in horrid Hollywood (I fled & changed careers after quickly realizing how nasty of an industry it is).
An Executive Producer's function is to raise the money for film/TV projects, make the deals, and crack the whip when needed to keep everything running on time and on budget. The Director "runs the show" on set and directs the actors and frames the shots - not the Exec. Producer.
This person is right, Executive Producers (in film) are typically the film investors or , in t.v., the "suits" at a studio. Basically, the head of the hierarchical chain... the ones who would have final say on the product. Usually Directors and Show Runners have to answer to them as it's their money funding the project.
The term "Producer" often works as a catch-all title for many jobs in the film industry and can loosely be attributed to anyone who headed up the logistical challenge of putting a project together from start to finish...
However..."Producers" typically have a specialization and still aren't the main organizer of the project... for example the Post-Production Producer (who just oversees editing, color, effects, etc...) can often just be credited as a "Producer."
The "Real Producer" of a film or show is the person credited with the "Produced By" credit which is different than a "Producer" credit. The "Produced By" person is the one who basically shouldered the entire organizational and logistical load of the project... budget, schedule, paperwork.... etc. This person may informally be called the "Line Producer."
Co-Producer and Associate Producers are often vanity titles given out for nepotistic resume building but those titles may SOMETIMES involve a "junior" amount of responsibilities to either a "Producer" or the "Line Producer."
I know this system is retarded but thats the way it is in the Entertainment industry.
In reality an XPs role can vary widely, from securing financing, to simply providing financing, to having a more hands-on role. Watch any credit roll and see how many XPs there are on some projects.
