One big issue that I see is that within california tech companies, there are a lot of brainwashed former Chinese nationalists who are employed. They hold valid u.s. work visas or even green cards, have family (parents and grandparents) in China, and get their news from Weibo or other Chinese-sponsored sources.
They are the ones that I've seen protest loudly about how it's racist to say the virus leaked from Wuhan, and are also responsible for implementing some of the mechanisms to rank popularity on search results, rankings, and even banning content.
The ones who learn the truth about the CCP and publically share their views end up getting their parents and grandparents arrested, and threatened about the safety of their parents if they don't listen. I know several folks in this position.
To give you an idea of how bad this problem of Chinese government influence is, at the company I work for, there was a team that was formed without the knowledge of upper management to develop a censorship engine and way for the Chinese government to access data about it's Chinese users. The teams management intentionally avoided communication with specific policy review teams that is required for a product to be developed. When someone else in the company learned of about this project development, they protested loudly in the internal forums and the policy team was made aware of this project... The policy review team members were really pissed too. Eventually, the team responsible for trying to organize efforts to appease China secretly was disbanded and the people responsible for organizing the shady efforts were letgo.
