During World War II, the worst of it was when family members would turn in family members because they were Jewish. That would justify it by saying they were just obeying the law, even while the Nazis were taking them away.
Most of them were never seen again. I don't know if those family members felt remorse or not, or even ended up knowing the Fate of the people they turned in.
