“If we change toward a plant-based diet, we could save up to 8 billion tons of CO2 every single year. We could feed ourselves on much less land, and nature could recover.”
If the world moves to a plant based diet...won't we use much MORE land? Soil depletion? Surface erosion? Increased carbon footprints from the massive increase in farm machinery needed? (or will we just use manual migrant labor)
Well, cattle do consume far more vegetation than we do, but hay fields generally aren't plowed and sprayed like crops for humans. When energy becomes freer, we may be able to convert deserts or stack our crop fields like parking structures, or use more year-round green houses. Currently our species does seem to horde a lot of the space on this world.
