If the AZ audit wasn't going to be huge, they wouldn't be spending so much time and money to fight it, and try to discredit it before the results even come out.
It's like when a kid does something wrong and races home as fast as he can to tell his parents, "So-and-so is is a liar, don't believe what they say, I didn't do it!" The public should be the parents at this point, looking at each other and asking, "didn't do what?"
Nothing screams "guilty" quite like being overly defensive before an accusation is even made.
