Largely fabricated stockholm syndrome is a copout to explain away why slaves didnt revolt when all the men were off fighting.. it was a Black former slave that fought in court to own his slave unto death he wanted to prevent him from leaving to serve his white neighbor.

All did not follow this but Slave masters had a code of I own their labor so i will shelter, feed, cloth, tend to the sick injured slaves . They retired slaves took care of them till death. In comparison the poor white children in the North cities died early some were prostituted at 10 there is a saying there is an irishman under every nail of the train tracks whites worked dangerous jobs they werent valuable. Black and white relations was more familial and the two developed together in the south. Stonewall jackson other south leaders were trying to develop a process of freeing, preparing developing blacks for eventual freedom.

The civil war destroyed the south economy infrastructure which is part of the reason blacks were so poor the whites were poor alongside them too it was northern intervention in southern politics using blacks for their politcal gain that seeded started the souring of race relations that led to Jim crowe later. there are stories of black retired slaves getting their possessions gold etc taken by union troops. new freed blacks died in camps from disease starvation that the union placed them in i saw numbers of close many 100,000s of blacks dying as consequence of the war.

There is more but even at its worse the treatment Blacks got was better here than Slaves were treated in South America caribbean( many dying within 7 years), Africa (cannibalzed sex slaved women), middle east ( castrated men, high percentage died crossing sahara) .
