My belief, "Dad was executed", short and sweet, devastating too if you had no idea. W had been writing on a piece of paper during the funeral. I'm assuming that is what he wrote.

I agree. At first thought it was a picture, but one sentence with news like that would do it.
Why does he write it down?
Why tell them during the funeral, as he is carried by? Doesn’t make sense.
And did W write the notes to everyone else? Not likely.
So it’s more likely that the letters were from an outsider.
