Seems like a ridiculous rumor to me, especially because it indicates Rush as not a true believer and he had to be. It's like saying one of Jesus' disciples didn't really believe. People don't endure those slings and arrows of persecution for nothing. He already could have had all the money and fame in the world, so this starts off saying that is the opposite of a motivator, then tries to insinuate the person was later shilling for fame and money.
