As fare as I can tell we got

two school of thoughts:

One is the paganist/Luciferians hijacked Christianity when the Roman empire who they controlled was in upheaval and about to collapse because of Christians and created Catholicism. This is the school I believe

Another theory is yours it got infiltrated.
