I was born in the 80s and remember "learning" about all of these hoaxes during school. I guess back then it was harder to get everyone on the same page of what hoax to push that decade. In college they were all pretty much on the "global warming" hoax.
Pre internet. It was harder for them to coordinate the distribution of misinformation to us peons. Imagine using snail mail and in person meetings to plot and plan. I remember how impactful fax machines were to getting things the same day vs three or more mail days.
