My current conclusion is the tribal dichotomy of the left that is the biggest factor. When ones identity is derived primarily from their associated group comfort is found in conforming to said group. Rather than create personal conclusions it's easier to just accept what the group leader proclaims. On the contrary if you see yourself primarily as an individual are forced to think critically to sort through the many viewpoints.
The internet has greatly increased this problem of group think in it's manner directing people directly to the tribes they wish to associate rather than should associate with. Algorithms then reinforce the person to be identified in this group.
If you think about it, when everyone knows everyone in a small town they are forced to associate with the people in that town more frequently. Walking down a road you'd probably recognize several people as individuals. In a big city everyone trends to gravitate to like minded groups. When walking down a road there people are just... People. Faceless strangers that aren't part of your tribe.
