In the 70s and there abouts, HFCS was a byproduct of corn processing. Farmers tried to create a product to compete with the sugar cane importers from down south. They were getting crushed because they couldn't market the product because of inital costs and cane sugar was cheap.

American farmers either themselves, or through their orgs. demanded government tarifs and import taxes on sugar cane so the new HFCS they were marketing could compete in the American market.

They also got subsidies IIRC because: "muh farm", "if you don't support American farmers you're a commie gov't bastard."

Even the FDA at the time said it was safe to use, but only in VERY small quantities daily. It was NEVER dreamed it would be part of every meal of every day. Check out their website, if the info is still there. Corn syrup, hfcs especially, was never approved for the high concentrations found in the modern diet.

Corporate greed, and probably some cabal tampering got us here. Granulated sugar not labled as cane is actually beat sugar, made from beats! Bet that contributes too.

Our family uses cane sugar, and drink cane sugar pop and such. We've restricted the amount of hfcs we injest. Huge quality of life difference.
