Some years ago, I heard a story about a Princess who lived in a galaxy long ago and far, far way. As the story was told to me, the Princess was known to have said something to the effect of: "the more you tighten your grip, the more slips through your fingers..."
To my mind, THAT very precious young lady was wise beyond her years...
Then I wonder, How is it even POSSIBLE to want slaves instead of patriotic citizen collaborators?
And, according to Frank Herbert, Duke Leto Atreides knew very well: "the only coin with which loyalty can be purchased is... loyalty..."
