What kind of hospital was he in, or what section of a "regular" hospital was he in? Usually, when Drs make this determination, it's in a mental ward or an actual mental hospital. If they see any kind of dissent among the patients, they will just declare them medically unfit to make their own decisions and do it anyway. Seems to me, that's the situation this man was in. Doesn't make it right, bit that's how "mental" patients are treated.
