Downdetector.com shows nothing but red because of Akamai being down. I won't even pretend to know what that is. Good thing? Bad thing?

Akamai is a large Content Distribution Network. It hosts content from Microsoft, Apple, Amazon and lots of other big name companies and uses geographical association to IP addresses to direct network traffic to the appropriate download location that is closer to the client.
Gotcha. Thanks!
Probably a bad analogy but I think of these giant DNS registrars as a sort of internet phone book.
You have Ip 8.8.8.8 and they know that is google.com
Just like john smith is (123) 456-7890
When a DNS goes down, if you type in the website, it doesn't know what IP to go to and it times out or you get an error.
That helps! Thanks!
