Grateful Dead. One of the most quintessential American bands, music spanning every corner of America. Amazing musicians, amazing lyrics. Truly dive deep, they are one the greatest bands in all of human history and a conduit for Americas soul, America's resonance. Their catalog is many decades long spanning thousands of shows many of which are available to listen to for free on Archive.org.
"Let it be known there is a fountain, that was not made by the hands of man." Ripple, Garcia/Hunter
That line makes me think of a scene in the series "Lost". I think the true nature of our reality is either being hinted at through music, TV, etc., or we are subconsciously expressing it through our creativity.
Hank Harrison has been implicated in being involved with MK ULKTRA as early as the 1950′s as a mind control “handler”. He came out to LA with virtually no musical experience and took over a band called The Warlocks. With a quick wave of a magic wand the Warlocks became the Grateful Dead, acid was handed out at every show and the band’s trademark film was The Wizard of Oz, the classic MK ULTRA programming film. Once the Grateful Dead experience was up and running Hank immediately took off. Here is how David Crosby remembered Hank Harrison; Harrison was no hippy drug addict pothead burnout. He always looked clean. In fact he was a trained shrink. The first time I saw him he was wearing a Searsucker suit and a bow tie and was carrying an attaché case. I could venture a guess that Harrison was a CIA operative or a Saul Alinsky graduate in charge of organizing bands like the Grateful Dead.” Of course, one may wonder how David Crosby would be so well versed in the CIA and The Grateful Dead but we know the answer to that question already don’t we?
Neil Cassidy himself was a volunteer participant in the government lsd experiments and talked openly about it. Doesn't change the fact the band and the musicians within it created some of the best music ever made.
I was a Dead fan too and I can't see how their music could be something sinister, but it feels weird knowing that "the man" created all these bands and there was nothing organic about it.
"the man" didn't create the Dead, Jerry, Pig Pen, Bobby etc did. You really think Jerry Garcia wouldn't have become a musician without "the man"? You don't know his history of you believe that. Listen to his music and read the lyrics, he was "awake" before we were.
Did the man use a situation to test some chemicals on some willing participants? Sure. So didn't a bunch of chemists in the community.
If you listen to Jerry solo and think there is nothing "organic" about it, there is nothing I can say or do, you're too far lost. The music they produced is simply the most organic ever created. Drop into a middle of a jam, any jam, and tell me "the CIA made this".
Fuck that.
The fountain was not created by the hands of man.

Thanks for pointing out that lyric.
