If true you need to move stat! I moved to TX - after about a year I had 2 things I needed to contact the govt/authorities for;
(1) called local game warden as 3 river otters had appeared in my backyard pond and were killing aging around eating giant crappies and largemouth bass we had stocked. I asked him if they wanted to come trap and relocate them, or provide me with a depredation permit to shoot them. He calmly replied, just shoot em and buryem’. I said, can you put that in an email or something so I have proof of your recommendation..? He said the longer we sit here on the phone the more fish you are losing to those otters - just go shoot em. I explained how where I came from they were federally protected and the game wardens would likely want them trapped and relocated etc. to which he replied - you ain’t there anymore and here, we just take care of shit and don’t make no fuss about it. End of call.
(2). Wanted to put an addition on my house so called the county clerk to see if I could talk to a building inspector about the process and at what stages I would need their ‘sign-offs’ as the project was completed. He said, I have no idea what you’re talking about - if you want to put an addition on your house just go ahead and start pouring the slab. The longer we’re on the phone the longer it’s gonna take for your addition to get done.
It’s basically like the Wild West down here compared to the communist hellhole I came from regarding taxes and permits.
I'm a straight, happily married man but your comment just gave me a freedom boner 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Hell I just remembered I had a 3rd time I made a call as I was having problems with my septic system where during extended rains my toilets wouldn’t flush until after rain subsided. So I called the county clerk again and asked if I could talk to someone regarding retrograding my septic system and if I needed a licensed contractor to do so. I think she put me in touch with the same guy that answered the ‘house inspection’ question above and I explained my problem. He told me to go to Home Depot and get 50’ of leak-drain tile tubing 4” and dig a trench from the end of one of the laterals downhill to a lower elevation and then bury it - that should solve your problems!!! He was absolutely right - 4 hours and $50 later and I’ve never had to drive to Dairy Queen to drop a duece in a rainstorm again.
Oh, and taxes. So first year after I buy the ranch I get called in for tax assessment. Lady says OK the previous owner had the house and 1 acre in homestead and the rest is listed as agricultural for primarily hay production. I laughed and said, well I think the previous owner was lying to you as someone does come and cut down the pastures a few times a year and take the bales but it’s kind of a free service as they do not pay us for the hay........she looks at me kinda funny and says, “Well let’s just leave it like it is as it’s saving you about $500 in taxes.” I said, are you serious? And she says, hey we don’t like paying taxes anymore than you!
Breathe the fresh air in Texas baby!!!
