Question: Is there a test that determines that a patient has the 'Delta' variant or any other for that matter. Asking for a friend.

There all these news stories that the Delta variant is super contagious and is spreading like wildfire etc. How does anybody know it is a Delta variant or any other variant. Or is it all just speculation?

There is no test. There is info on the CDC website how they determine this. I don't quite understand it. They take somewhere between 750 to 2000 specimens a week and look at genome sequencing to determine the variant and then guess how many cases are from the new variant based on how many showed from the sample.
