While you're at it, throw in One Piece (the most epic and long running manga/anime) which covers a lot of topics including the role of government in society, racism, good and evil, freedom, family and friendship (among other things) and tackles them all beautifully, as well as HunterXHunter because it's just awesome.

I grew up as a military brat and fell in love with anime as a kid when my dad was stationed in Japan. Manga/Anime can be super weird, but are one of my guilty pleasures.
