I remember visiting when I was in the Navy and you would see stickers with the radical "green Hawaii" movement. Yeah that place is more commie than cali and homeless EVERYWHERE.
Apparently it's been turned into kind of a theme park and the Hawaiian locals are mostly poor who work in big hotels or whatever, since the jobs are all tourism, and the nice places have all been taken over to make into tourist spots to cater to mainlanders or Japanese. And of course housing is bid up by people who don't live there. So I can see how locals would be unhappy people.
