It sounds like we as a community need to do hard research on available VPNs. I have the one I use, but who knows if it's susceptible to Chinese influence like ExpressVPN and others? I'm suspect of the ones that do big advertising, like NordVPN and ExpressVPN.
We also need to keep in mind that those "top ten VPN" lists out there on blogs are mostly ranked by the affiliate marketing percentages, not by actual features, etc.
Lastly, how can we be sure who owns the company? Do you all remember that the CIA had set up a company in a European nation for the sole purpose of spying on European officials, and it worked?
They sent out an email espousing support for Hong Kong during the protests - I signed up for the paid email service that day after using the free service for years & I let them know why.
