Will it actually prevent the automatic updates if you put your phone (off) in the microwave, as someone mentioned?

I think a microwave works as a 'faraday cage' ( look that up). This is why people joke about tin foil/tin foil hats. You can place your phone in a tin foil covering and it WILL stop messages. OR a cookie tin will work, assuming its made of aluminum and has a tightly closing lid.
I tried the foil.
Wrapped the thing and tried to see if I still had signal, and I did.
Aluminum won't suffice, it has to be something thicker.
I haven't tried foil + microwave, but that seems like a disaster waiting to happen.
I think what everyone really wants to use here is lead, sort of like what they use for x-ray vests.
You can probably get lead weights from a fishing store and hammer it out pretty thin to the point where you can get something workable... Cover up any gaps with aluminum or just more lead if it works out
You can probably also just use the same pouches they use for computer parts, I believe that's a plastic infused with lead...
