Like a hurricane is seasonal, could the common cold be similar? .. What if it's just a weak immune system that gets effected with a cold.. and it's an age old, seasonal, event, much like hurricanes? A certain criteria is required.. and it happens.

is it possible the flu doesn't actually spread?

If solarsavior is correct,

"Supposedly due to decreased vitamin D levels in winter. Your skin makes vitamin D when exposed to sun. Less sun exposure = less vitamin D."

then, there could be a genetic factor in this regarding how the body stores and utilizes Vitamin D. It would explain why a cold might run through a family -- because they are all genetically similar.
