I find the article odd in the fact they state "ex US president Donald Trump".

While technically it's true, but ex presidents are usually referred to as former president. Ex makes it sound bad.

I don’t remember ever hearing a former President called former president until they began that with Trump. It will always be President Obama, President Reagan, President Carter, etc…
