The idea that defective LEDs turn blue/purple is at least feasible: white LEDs are actually blue LEDs covered with a phosphor that downconverts some of the blue light to the rest of the visible spectrum. Defective LEDs might have a bad phosphor layer that peels off or decays from the heat.

The fluorescent veins though... shudder.
