I was thinking about buying a "plague mask" just to be ironic.

During the black plague they believed that the sickness was spread by the "miasma" which means the stench of the plague. So to protect themselves from getting sick, they filled the large beaked nose of the masks with all sorts of aromatic fragrances to keep the miasma out.

Needless to say, their masks were no more effective than the masks people wear today.
