More like they are just little packets of cellular waste and the membrane envelope has little proteins sticking out that act as labels and addresses so that the "cleanup crews" can identify and process the waste efficiently.

When the body is stressed more of these particles appear and at the same time the person might suffer flu-like symptoms because the body is trying to expel the waste through sweat, vomit, diarrhea, etc.
