Corn are the bad guys.

Corn have kernels. As in "kernel's of truth"

In other words, the bad guys think they alone should be the kernels (bearers of truth), as they are the only ones who can listen with their "ears" and have all the tassels (strings) to control the world with their gold.

Corn harvest season starts around September 17th.
