Take a look at the last two photos from the article:

Why does it say copywrited by Facebook in the bottom left-hand corner of the photos? If the family took the photos, wouldn't they'd own the copywrite?

you would have to look at their terms of service, I know a few added features that allowed the platform to claim ownership in exchange for the possibility of it being used for advertisement and a possibility at making money from that.
