Well, sound travels as a wave, and when that wave hits a wall (ie: a mask) it bounces back and becomes muffled. So, scientifically, if they pull their mask down, the soundwave can travel further and the basketball players would actually be able to hear their coach.

As far as why they are wearing a mask at all, I’m not sure.
