As a kid I stepped on a nail in the barn and it penetrated pretty deep. Dad told me to put tobacco on it. Mom would have rushed me in for a tetanus shot. I did not get sick.

He used to use chewing tobacco, as a farmer against the dust. Baseball players used to use chewing tobacco. Now they blow bubble gum and it looks pretty lame.
