Bush era they didn't smear all Muslims as terrorists, they smeared Iran's neighbors that it wanted to take over (Iraq and Afghanistan) as backwards sand farmers who could be easily beaten. Then the story changed to, they need to be civilized and liberalized for 20 years so they'll stop clinging to an ancient religion. Then an Iranian propaganda operation managed to install an Iranian asset into the WH and the story changed to, Muslims are wonderful and if you import them they'll kill all the Jews for you and not burn down churches and terrorize Christians.
