There are A LOT of corn fields in the midwest. The soil is rich, soft and easy to dig in, corn has shallow roots, you can dig it up and bury dead animals (pigs, cattle, sheep etc) and place the corn back on top of the packed soil, and it will continue to grow, with hardly a hint in the corn row that it was ever disturbed.
Growing up on a farm, we buried a lot of dead animals; it goes with the job. Growing up in a rural farm, we also knew how to not talk to outsiders.
