Anyone that earns the title of Marine after boot camp is a Marine for life. Once you leave the Corps, even though you're no longer active duty, you're still a Marine. This is just what I was taught as a Marine. There is no such thing as an ex-Marine, only former Marines.
I'm also curious as to WTF a "former" marine is. Dishonorable discharge?
