The second movie seemed to have fallen into the trap of using all secondary places and characters as 'set pieces' to move the story along rather than some 'natural' discovery process from the main characters that led them down the path.
The third one tried too hard to fit Neo into the 'jesus' metaphor they were building to end the story.
Just based on the preview for this 4th film looks like they are just going to rehash some of the tropes they used to push the narrative (I caught the scene of melting the mouth of someone, which was genius in episode 1 to show Neo just how out of control he was of his circumstances, rehashing it is like a teenage thinking 'that was cool, lets do it again')
